Success of the first edition of Debica GOODFEST Festival
Stars of ambitious and independent music scene were welcomed enthusiastically by the audience coming from all over Poland
Stars of this year’s Festival attracted visitors from all over Poland. Upon an invitation of Filip Berkowicz, Festival’s Artistic Director and of Festival co-organizers, viz. Tire Company Debica S.A. and Goodyear Dunlop Tires Polska in Debica arrived such artists as Marica, DJ Envee, R.U.T.A. band, Igor Boxx, L.U.C, Pablopavo, and also Pianohooligan. Numerous and lively cheering members of audience left no shade of doubt. The Debica GOODFEST Festival turned out to be highly successful and now it is a reason for pride not only for Debica and Subcarpathian region population.
„The first edition of GOODFEST Festival may be boldly classified as successful. All artists who we invited to Debica shared one common trait: willingness to create ambitious, free and engagé music, offering something more than tune and lyrics. The Festival was attended by talented young musicians whose lively performances were welcomed by big applause of the audience” – said Marta Konopacka, Communication Director of Tire Company Debica S.A. and Goodyear Dunlop Tires Polska.
Filip Berkowicz, head of such Festivals as, among others, Sacrum Profanum, Misteria Paschalia, Actus Humanus or Penderecki // Greenwood project, took also care for visual setting of the event. Multimedia space was arranged by the artists from Temporary Space Design who executed projects, among others, for European Congress of Culture, Barbican Centre in London or Lincoln Centre in New York. Their audiovisual projects could be admired also during concerts of such stars as Jamiroquai or Wyclef Jean.
The Festival was started by Blossom, a very promising artist playing Nu Jazz music who unanimously won “Muzzo”, the national competition organized by the Interia Web portal. He perfectly matched the style of GOODFEST Festival. Blossom was followed immediately by an energetic performance given by Marica. On reggae musical scene, dominated by masculine voices, Marica is a genuine phenomenon. The lovers of dancehall-soul-funk-reggae music did not miss a single minute of the performance given by the excited and well presented star that charmed everybody with her talent and positive energy for more than an hour.
Marica show was followed by DJ Envee, well known to the Polish audience for performing in a DJ team called “Innocent Wizards”. Under the influence of the artist the audience fell into hypnotic trance, which did not lack artist-specific, astonishing and daring musical twists. Once again DJ Envee proved that we have a musician of large stature in the Polish music market.
The connoisseurs of alternative music waited impatiently for the performance of R.U.T.A. band. – which stands for Movement of Utopia, Transcendence, Anarchy / Reactionist Terrorist-Artistic Union. This time also the unusual musical collective provided a lot of unforgettable emotions. The audience easily got carried away by the music performed using such original instruments as hurdy-gurdy, Plock fiddle, a unique fiddle called Bilgorai Suka, saz, traditional baraban drums, Polish frame drums, double bass and musical saw. Ancient musical instruments were accompanied by the lyrics from the folk songs of rebellion and poverty dating back to 16th – 20th centuries. Spontaneous reactions were abundant.
Finally Igor Boxx (called in Polish Igor Pudlo) came to the stage. Known from Wroclaw-based Scalpel duo and admired for a contract with prestigious Ninja Tune record company. For its „Scalpel” and „Confusion” records, produced by the London record company, Scalpel Duo won many awards and received numerous distinctions including but not limited to Passport of the Polityka weekly. Long-awaited artist gave first class performance. Unsettling, energetic and with various styles music matched perfectly the performance of another equally interested artist – Piotr Orzechowski dubbed “Pianohooligan”. This young composer and jazz pianist, who played on the piano since 5 years of age, captured hearts not only of the lovers of classical music and jazz. He stirred also interest of the guests not used to such kind of music. The charismatic artist captured the hearts of the audience that awarded his performance with impetuous applause.
A special surprise that preceded Pianohooligan’s performance, was a documentary film, displayed on large outdoor screen, with Krzysztof Penderecki, the most famous Debica inhabitant of our times. The outstanding composer and conductor said that he was overjoyed that his music had been played in his home town Debica.
„Currents are only threads that I use to patch jumpers” – that is what said L.U.C, another star at this year’s Festival, about his music. Music and text, film and graphics – are main fields of artist’s activities. For his eclectic works he received, among others, the Award of Wroclaw School of Music and Passport of the Polityka Weekly. The artist with remarkable appearance and eccentric behavior fired audience’s enthusiasm so much that long after the concert his performance was discussed.
The Festival audience was also bewildered by Pablopavo, a vocalist of cult Vavamuffin. Despite the fact that artist’s music is considered to be Warsaw through and through, it turned out that at Debica ragamuffin, reggae or folk sound equally thrilling and absolutely relaxing. This year’s Festival was closed by the second set of DJ Envee.
