Second Edition of GOODFEST Festival – major music event on the cultural map of Poland

On the last day of August, at Debica Second Edition of Debica GOODFEST Festival, a new music project will be held. It will be organized by Tire Company Debica S.A. and Goodyear Dunlop Tires Polska. Last year’s edition of Festival gained high recognition in the community of music industry critics and echoed widely in mass media. Also this year, the organizers along with Filip Berkowicz, the Artistic Director of Debica GOODFEST Festival – the head of such renowned festivals as Sacrum Profanum, Misteria Paschalia, Actus Humanus or the penderecki // greenwood project, prepared a myriad of attractions for the fans of Polish quality music.

At night of August 31, 2013 at the City Stadium in Debica performances will be given by the artists who changed the face of Polish popular music and caught the world’s eye to original and courageous sounds from Poland. The following artists will give performances: Skalpel feat. Pianohooligan, Fisz Emade Tworzywo, Mitch & Mitch, Marcin Masecki, Julia Marcell, Très.b and Grabek. The Debica GOODFEST Festival will be partnered by: Debica Town Council, National Centre of Culture and the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage.

The Festival has a unique formula, because it is gratuitous, which means everybody who appreciates culture and wants to have some fun may attend it. It is a major assumption of GOODFEST Festival organizers, Tire Company Debica S.A. and Goodyear Dunlop Tires Polska that support the Polish culture and its creators in such unique manner.

„The Debica GOODFEST Festival is becoming a major event on the cultural map of the Subcarpathian region, but also of the overall Poland. Thanks to collaboration with one of the most renowned organizers of such events, the GOODFEST Festival is already winning a reputation of a music festival of the highest caliber, and the Debica city dwellers can be proud of hosting it. Thanks to the Festival Debica has become a focal point for various music fans and the best music artists. The Festival has also created an opportunity for the local community members to come up with their own initiatives that can support the Festival itself and promote the City of Debica and the Subcarpathian region all over Poland” – said Jacek Pryczek, the President of Management Board of Tire Company Debica S.A. and Goodyear Dunlop Tires Polska.

Similarly to 2012, all Festival concerts will be accompanied by a unique visual setting. The multimedia space will be again arranged by the brilliant artists from Temporary Space Design who, among others, executed projects for such renowned events as Sacrum Profanum, European Congress of Culture and institutions as Barbican Center in London or Lincoln Center in New York. Their original audiovisual projects could be also admired during concerts of such music stars as Jamiroquai or Wyclef Jean.

This year the Debica GOODFEST Music Festival will start a bit later, at 6.00 p.m. and will come to an end after midnight, which is probably good news for the fans from outside Debica, because it will give them extra time to arrive on time. The organizers thought about comfort of the Festival-goers – catering zone will be available for everybody and for non-motorized fans special, night owl bus service will be operated by the local city transport. More details will be published soon on the Festival website at www.goodfest.pl and on Facebook profile at https://www.facebook.com/Debica.Goodfest

GOODFEST 2013 - PERFORMERS

Skalpel Duo

A Wroclaw-based duo of DJs and producers who became famous in 2004 as the first Polish project released by the prestigious Ninja Tune record label. However, before Marcin Cichy and Igor Pudło started their careers in the United Kingdom, in the year 2000 the released their demo record titled “Polish Jazz” and mixtape “Virtual Cuts" with Blend Records at their own expense. The above records drew attention of the British record company for which at that time such artists as The Cinematic Orchestra, Amon Tobin and Jaga Jazzist recorded their music. For Ninja Tune record company Skalpel recorded two very well received albums: „Skalpel” (Scalpel) and “Konfusion” (Confusion).

The distinctive feature of Skalpel duo became combining of modernity and tradition. The project name already reveals that Messrs. Cichy and Pudlo cut Polish jazz recordings and blend them, creating new quality with fresh and exceptional sounds. Their music is not only a perfect offer for the lovers of widely understood electronic downtempo music – which is played by famous Ninja Tune artists – but also a first step towards getting familiar with outstanding tradition of the Polish jazz.

After a few-year-break in duo activities (it should be noted that at that time the artists were active and recorded awesome solo albums) Skalpel came back to the stage and gave a performance at the Sacrum Profanum Festival in September 2012, sharpening their fans appetites for a new record. Who knows? Maybe at the Goodfest Festival they will let the audience in on the secret? By the way it will be already the second visit to the Debica Festival of one the Skalpel’s artist  – Igor Boxx excellent performance was very well received during the first edition of Festival in 2012.

Fisz and Emade

Their grandfather is a renowned radio journalist, and their father – an outstanding musician. Given that there is no doubt that it was worthwhile to follow up family tradition. Fisz and Emade i.e. brothers Bartosz and Piotr Waglewscy, have always felt that music was their true vocation, so no wonder that their first steps on stage they made already as teenagers. At that time still rebels, metal music lovers, later they were gradually discovering rap music and related areas, and finally they called themselves RHX, and then Plastic Material, and they were permanently registered in the minds of domestic fans of alternative hip-hop music made in Poland. When they achieved a success in this field, they reverted to heavy oversteered guitars and played with Kim Nowak band – and again they were successful. However, their main passion remains hip-hop music.

They create music and give performances under the name of Plastic Material or simply – Fisz and Emade. The first artist delights with light touch of guitar strings, whereas the second artist – with efficient, original production. This translates not only into recognition of the audience, but also into numerous awards – the brothers have already been granted  The Polityka weekly award called Passport (2007) and Frederic award (2012). It is hard to predict what will be their consecutive music project in the future, but one can be certain of the highest quality – Fisz and Emade cannot do in any other way.

Julia Marcell

Young and talented, but already with experience and appreciated all around the world. She lives and creates in Berlin, though she was brought up in Olsztyn, Poland. She is optimistic about her future and dreams about composing an ever-green hit. Everybody who has heard at least one track from her "June" album is sure that Julia is not a flash in the pan, but the artist who knows her value and knows what she talks about. Julia is not scared of taking bold decisions. She was not scared either to use Sellaband Web portal when nobody in Poland had heard about crowd funding – and with the help of Web portal users she raised funds for her debut album released in 2009 under the titled "It Might Like You". When it has turned out that success on the Web translated into offers in real world, without hesitation Julia moved to Berlin, because she knew that it was the place where she would find people to create music from her dreams. Such people as, for example, music producer Moses Schneider, known from working relationship with Pixies or Beatsteaks.

Today Julia’s track record comprises two (2) records, several prestigious awards including the Polityka weekly Passport Award and Frederic Award for "June" album, concert tours in Germany, USA, Japan, Finland and Czech Republic and most importantly – trust of her fans.

Marcin Masecki

One of the best, and frankly speaking, most trendy Polish pianists of younger generation. He equally easy performs jazz, avant-garde music and also classical music, though he has his own iconoclastic attitude towards it. It is enough to listen to his interpretation of the great work of Bach – "Die Kunst der Fuge" – recorded using a Dictaphone. For a change, at his latest album called "Polonaises" he conducts ten-person-strong brass band towards artistic rehabilitation of this aesthetics.

His music skills Masecki perfected at Berkley College of Music in Boston. His wide artistic achievements comprise projects with, among others, Tomasz Stanko, Michal Urbaniak, Wojciech Waglewski and Reni Jusis, and his piano parts can be heard on the records of such artists as Afro Kolektyw, Pink Freud or Muzykoterapia. He is a member of the following bands: Profesjonalizm, Telewizor, Papierosy, (Professionalism, TV-set, Cigarretes), TAQ and Paristetris... One of numerous Marcin’s passions are soundtracks – with Prima Vista Quarter he recorded new interpretations of compositions from the 1930’s films.

Being a versatile instrumentalist and composer he was awarded many times – in 2013 he was nominated to the Polityka weekly Passport awards, and his piano skills were awarded, among others, at competitions in Russia and Italy.

If you ever claim that you know what Marcin Masecki is doing at the moment, then he is bound to be already one step ahead.

Mitch & Mitch

A lot has been written about phenomenal Mitch & Mitch , though very few have managed to grasp the gist. Attempts made to define project style generated such weird terms as black metal afrobeat, nine person duo or even … Potato Republic. After all the musicians admit that indeed in the past they tried to fuse black metal with afrobeat, but it "did not work out".

The band active since 2003 has recorded four albums – the latest one, for the time being, is "Love For Three Cockroaches", recorded jointly with Igor Krutoglov – and has flirted with a myriad of music genres. They started their career with successful pastiche of country music and then they moved to jazz, rock or Latin American music. At concerts they improvise a great deal, and their extended line-up and unconstrained imagination allow them in fact … to do everything. At stage Mitch & Mitch is something like Mike Patton and Frank Zappa playing joint jam session with jazz big-band and with Tercet Egzotyczny group (Exotic Trio).

The front man at Mitch & Mitch is Macio Moretti, a founder of Lado ABC publishing house, a musician who plays also at Paristetris, Baaba bands (and a lot of others), an award winner of, among others, Przekrój weekly’s Wonders award and Polityka weekly’s Passport award. He was also granted Frederic awards for … graphical designs. But this is really peanuts compared to what Mitch & Mitch can show at the concert.

Très.B

If someone believes that music background disturbs with creating fascinating rock music, then having got familiar with Très.B  music he will think it over.

The history of band foundation could be used as a script for a film. A young Polish girl leaves Poland for Denmark to develop her musical talents and perfect performance skills. At school she meets two lads who listened to similar music and were willing to set up a band. In big final scene the band becomes successful in the home country of the girl and has every predisposition towards conquering the musical stages of the whole Europe – at The Great Escape, prestigious British festival several hundred people did not manage to attend their concert, since interest was so huge that the organizers run out of tickets!

It is not fiction it is reality. Misia Furtak, Olivier Heim and Thomas Pettit created an explosive mixture of cultures and music interests, which led to the situation where the alternative pop-rock they offer won big applause of critics and fans. The best evidence are the awards that have recently been granted to Très.B – 2011 Frederic Award for Debut Record of the Year ("The Other Hand") and the Polityka Weekly Passport 2012 in the Popular Music category – but also they won confidence of fans who helped the band to finance second album titled "40 Winks Of Courage".

Grabek

Two years ago the recorded an album called "8", but in fact he scored bull’s-eye. Program Three of the Polish Radio labeled him as the most interesting Polish debuts in recent years and he was nominated for the Frederic Award by the Phonographic Academy for the best album with electronic music. Wojciech Grabek is a new artist in the catalogue of Kayax Records. He is a Poznan-based violin player, composer and creator of electronic music, with huge potential and intriguing, courageous approach to music. He played a lot at home and abroad, he received Best Recording 2011 honorable mention from "High Fidelity" magazine. Some people even claim that he is Polish Thom York – which is not necessarily an exaggeration ...

Captivating and slightly alarming climate of his recordings, where sounds of violin are blended with dirty electronic music, reminds not only of Radiohead leader achievements, but also of Icelandic creators such as Sigur Ros, Björk or Olafur Arnalds. Grabek says openly that he is fascinated with the work of these artists, but his proposal takes the audience by surprise with originality and freshness, rare not only in domestic market. "I want to surprise people" – admits Grabek in interviews. We want to be surprised – we respond, keeping our fingers crossed for further career of this outstanding artist.
