Interactive Exhibition About Senses at Debica

“The World of Senses” is another interactive exhibition at Debica that is organized jointly by Tire Company Debica S.A., Goodyear Dunlop Tires Polska and Jagiellonian University.

In the gallery of the City Community Center at Debica an interactive exhibition titled “The World of Senses” was opened. The exhibition is organized in collaboration with the Jagiellonian University by Tire Company Debica S.A. and Goodyear Dunlop Tires Polska. The exhibition presents anatomical, physiological and physical foundations for the operation of human sense organs.

It is an interactive exhibition because to explore the exhibits the visitor has to perform on his or her own approximately 60 experiments to learn about the structure and operation of human sense organs. It is already the second exhibition of the Cracow-based Jagiellonian University Museum that Tire Company Debica S.A. and Goodyear Dunlop Tires Polska Sp. z o.o. managed to have it displayed at Debica. The previous exhibition titled “Sciences in Remote and Recent Past”, available for the general public in fall last year, also in the gallery of the City Community Center, proved to be extremely popular both with children, youth and adults. It was visited by more than 3,000 visitors.

“The World of Senses” exhibition was divided into three thematic areas: “Receptors – Recorders of Signals for the Nervous System”, “Mono and Stereo” and “To Cheat Senses”. The presented topics in combination with experiments will make the visitors wonder how the human being receives visual, auditory, smell, gustatory and tactual stimuli from his surroundings.

In the “Receptors – Recorders of Signals for the Nervous System” section the visitor is encouraged to carry out on his or her own the experiments showing the structure and basic properties of human sense organs. The visitor will find out on his or her own that image on the retina is reversed. It will be also possible to test one’s own audibility curve and to find out if she/he can “read with fingers”, to smell several pleasant and unpleasant smells trying on his or her own to identify them” – said Maciej Kluza, PhD., the custodian from the Department of History of Science and Scientific Instruments at the Jagiellonian University Museum. In the “Mono and Stereo” Section thanks to stimulating experiments the visitor will be able to reply the question if a pair of eyes and ears enhance his or her capability to perceive the world. Meanwhile the “To Cheat Senses” Section is devoted to illusions and joint operation of senses where the largest category of experiments includes optical and geometrical as well as acoustic illusions” – added Maciej Kluza, PhD.

“Following the principle “I saw and remembered, I performed and understood” we support the education of the youth, bringing to Debica one of the most interesting educational and informational projects in Poland. The admission to the exhibition is free to all interested people. The enthusiastic reception of the previous exhibition “Sciences in Remote and Recent Past” confirmed our belief that it is worthwhile to promote and support such initiatives” – said Jacek Pryczek, President of the Management Board of Tire Company Debica S.A. and Goodyear Dunlop Tires Polska.

The interactive exhibition titled “The World of Senses” was opened for the general public at the Jagiellonian University Museum on September 30, 2005 in Cracow. It was the second exhibition of this type organized at the Jagiellonian University Museum and at the same time the first exhibition that was to such a large extent connected with natural sciences. The previous exhibition titled “Sciences in Remote and Recent Past”, available for the general public in the 2000-2005 period, was one of the first interactive exhibitions in Poland. To date it has been exhibited in almost 30 places in Poland and abroad. The total number of visitors reached 250 thousand.
