PERFORMERS

BRODKA

Monika Brodka has been renowned to be one of the top talents on the Polish pop music scene since 2003, when still being a teenager, she won the third edition of “Idol” television music talent show. However, for her genuine artistic outpouring we had to wait until 2010 when her first smashing album titled "Granda" (English “Stink") was released. Her artistic maturity combined with hits and undeniable personal charm were the reasons why the fans of popular radio hits but also the fans of ambitious music fell in love with BRODKA. Two years later Monika Brodka confirmed that she was a first-rate artist with her phenomenal EP titled "LAX", appreciated both by her audience and critics who rewarded her with numerous awards including primarily five Frederic statuettes.
Today BRODKA does not have to prove anything to anybody, since she has become not only a renowned artist, but also a leading artist in her class. The entire Poland has been waiting impatiently for her next album, including in particular her singing female colleagues – fearing certainly that Monika will outstrip them and leave far behind.

Kaliber 44

With such long experience and such achievements they could easily be an institution on the Polish music scene. But they are a legend. In 1990s they outclassed other domestic rappers with their own style, laid-back attitude and surprising associations. The fascinations of three young rappers - members of the band from Silesia (Abradab, Joka, Magik) were also atypical – "Mysterious Book. Prologue" is a high caliber horror-rap inspired by Grave Diggaz. At times it is so psychedelic and unpredictable that even ODB itself would be scared. However, despite such models to follow, Kaliber 44 became a cult formation and gained extreme popularity. It is enough to say that their debut album released in 1996 has been sold in more than 100 thousand copies. The band had been nominated four times for the Frederic award. Eventually in 2000 it was granted the Frederic statuette for its album titled "3:44".

The end of millennium saw also the end of the band. Magik, a band member committed a suicide, whereas another member Joka emigrated to the United States. A third band member Abradab did not part with rap and he clearly managed to maintain hip-hop flame. In 2013 Kaliber 44 relaunched its activities and the band gives concerts again with the following line-up: Abradab, Joka and DJ Feel-X, and at their leisure the artists prepare another album titled “4:44”. The release of new album is expected still in this year and it will undoubtedly the most awaited album in the Polish rap music in 2014.

Dawid Podsiadło

Are talent shows helpful in discovering genuine stars? The example of Dawid Podsiadło proves to all doubters that “Though this be madness, yet there's method in't”. A talented 20-year-old musician won the second edition of "X Factor” talent show, and under the supervision of an outstanding producer Bogdan Kondracki he recorded his first album … and immediately he won the title “Debut of the Year”. Top positions in sales rankings, triple Platinum Album, and on the top of that several hit singles turned radio playlists upside down. In his debut album titled "Comfort and Happiness" Dawid managed to combine the lightness of pop music with an ambitious approach to lyrics, composition and arrangement. There is no surprise that he was praised by reviewers, and those who wanted to grant him prestigious awards and distinctions had to stand in a line. He was nominated to the Politics weekly Passport award and to MTV Europe Music Awards, whereas Third Program of the Polish Radio granted him Matthew award in the category "Best Debut in Light Music". After all it is only the beginning of his artistic career. Probably the best of all he has ever dreamed of.

KAMP!

Initially KAMP! was the best Polish electro pop export band. When they started to play their new wave and chill wave music back in 2007, they had very few followers and enthusiasts on the Polish market. Therefore initially KAMP! launched its career in the foreign countries. They gave performance, among others during famous SXSW festival in Austin and during The Great Escape festival in Brighton, UK. But they also played their music at the top Polish festivals such as Open'er, OFF and Audioriver just to mention a few. Their first international single titled "Cairo" was released by “Discotexas”, a Portuguese records company. The audience liked that single so much that it was added at the beginning of one of the famous sets called “The Magician”.

When after five years of giving concerts KAMP! finally released their debut album the Polish music market was all abuzz. What the Polish listeners liked the most about KAMP! music was the fact that the sound and style of their music did not allow to tell the difference between the Polish band and the top global electro pop bands. One of the reviewers, writing about the band in the "Under The Radar" magazine, stated that they are doomed for success. Today there is no doubt that his words were prophetic.

BOKKA

Nobody knows who they are, because they scrupulously hide their personal details, using as a shield, a slogan that is hard to be undermined: ”music is of utmost importance". Their debut was a couple of months ago and they created a lot of commotion amongst the audience and critics who had already developed lists with top albums in 2013. After a debut of their album titled simply "BOKKA", the lists and rankings had to be changed, since the mysterious trio delivered on their first album an intriguing combination of beautiful, movie-like tunes and bald sound experiments, refined with modern production. The album could not be omitted also for another reason – after all frequently read Pitchfork portal wrote about the Polish band and in its review it enthused about extraordinary climate of a single titled "Town Of Strangers".

The right mood can be also found during live concerts of BOKKA. Though before debut album nobody had known whether the band would ever set out for a tour, because it wanted to remain anonymous, but the musicians dispelled these doubts very quickly. Most probably they will now show their faces, but we are bound to deliver a lot of good music.

Fismoll

Katarzyna Nosowska, a renowned Polish singer, says that Fismoll music "melts her heart". Arkadiusz Glensk, because that is his real name, is a musician that stands a chance to mark clearly the Poland’s presence on the global map of avant-pop. This modest lad with a guitar, an instrumentalist and a composer, picked up his stage name after the key in which he is alleged to sing most frequently and most willingly. For him the fismoll key is a manifestation of everything, which is the most natural in music.

Arkadiusz Glensk (“Fismoll") was growing up surrounded by music (which was a  result of his parents’ care) – his father is a violinist and his mother is a cello player. He developed his talent at the 2nd degree Comprehensive Music School in Poznan, commonly dubbed as "School of Talents". To date he has recorded one studio album "(At Glade)", which was ranked on 20th place on the list of top selling records in Poland. Soon to feel Scandinavian climate we will not have to listen to Ólafur Arnalds  or Sigur Rós records. Already today Fismoll is dubbed "Polish Arnalds".

Stara Rzeka (literal translation “Old River”)

Old River runs deep. Not only in Poland. A debut album of Kuba Ziołek echoed widely also in the West and was present in numerous music reviews of the year. The reviewers noted a certain paradox present in this album: despite various influences the album titled "Cloud Shadow Above Hidden Field" renders a very coherent vision. The acoustic folk, disturbing drones, motoric krautrock or ear-piercing black metal – all that represent indispensable pieces of jig-saw puzzle, which draws the audience in more and more with every minute. Ziołek’s music was also appreciated at home and he was nominated for the “Passport’ award of the Politics weekly. Debut of the Old River was also granted an award for the album of the year by the editorial office of T-Mobile Music portal.

Kuba Ziołek residing in Bydgoszcz is not a novice. For a couple of years now he has been one of the pillars of the Polish alternative music. About his composer artistry he already convinced by such albums as Tin Pan Alley, Ed Wood, Alameda 3, Hokei or T'ien Lai. Though the above bands represent great stylistic range, they have one thing in common: originality and being away from the mainstream. It seems that Ziołek feels much better in the old river bed.

Rebeka

"One of the most interesting albums ever in the Polish music", "One of the top albums of the Polish electronic music", "Album of the Year" – these are just some of the headlines that were used by music media reviewing the year 2013. Rebeka, a Poznan-based duo, turned out to the a great winner of the last couple of months on the Polish music scene, when it was ranked on the top of most rankings and hit charts for its album titled "Hellada" and a single titled "Melancholy". Quite deservedly, because music proposition of Bartek Szczęsny and Iwona Skwarek comprise thrilling, dance productions that stick in one’s memory for a long time. Their tracks are excellent on the studio albums, but they sound equally well in concert. "A specific combination of charismatic vocalist and charismatic producer" – as the artists describe themselves – delights both the fans of club music and dances and the Sunday listeners who listen to the music only in the privacy of their homes.

The experimental pop music of Rebeka is today one of the hottest commodities on the Polish market, also worth promoting in the West. One can check the validity of this point by listening to "Hellada”, the already golden album, and to the numerous tracks of the duo available on the Web. However, we recommend going to Rebeka concert, because their live performances deserve a separate award.
